My Journey into Data Science at IIT Madras

Personal reflections on starting the BS Data Science program at IIT Madras — challenges, learnings, and advice for aspiring data science students.

Why I Chose Data Science at IIT Madras

From my school days, I always had a strong interest in technology. I loved exploring how websites worked and had a bit of exposure to web development. But during my intermediate years, I made a decision I later regretted — I chose Biology as my main subject. That meant I couldn’t go for the traditional B.Tech path.

For a while, I felt stuck. Then I discovered the IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications, a program open to students from any background. It felt like a second chance, and I knew I had to take it.

Excitement Meets Reality

Clearing the qualifier exam and getting into the program was exciting, but reality set in quickly. Unlike traditional classroom programs, this one is distance learning with weekly assignments and monthly quizzes. There’s no teacher chasing you — you have to stay self-motivated and disciplined.

Coming from a non-maths background, I found the initial months challenging. Matching the speed of the degree was tough, but that’s what made it more meaningful.

Building the Foundation

Currently, I’m in the foundation level, where Mathematics and Statistics play a major role. Initially, I was nervous since my basics weren’t strong, but now I find these subjects exciting. They are truly the backbone of data science.

This program has changed me as a person. It has improved my problem-solving ability, logical thinking, and independence. The challenges force you to grow smarter and more resilient.

Balancing Life and Studies

Distance learning is tough, especially when balancing it with other commitments. But it’s possible with proper planning. I stick to a schedule, pre-plan my weeks, and make sure to stay disciplined. Motivation may fluctuate, but discipline keeps me going.

I also believe that you shouldn’t just learn for the sake of passing exams. Apply your learnings in real life — work on projects, repeat problem-solving exercises, and keep experimenting.

Key Learnings

  • Mathematics and statistics are not optional — they’re the foundation of data science.
  • Discipline is more important than motivation in distance learning.
  • Assignments and quizzes prepare you for industry-level challenges.
  • Growth comes from applying knowledge, not just memorizing it.
  • Each small success builds confidence and prepares you for bigger challenges.

Advice for Aspiring Students

If you’re considering this program, here’s my advice:

  • Focus on maths and stats: Don’t take them lightly; they’re essential.
  • Be prepared to work hard: Go beyond lectures and explore extra resources.
  • Stay disciplined: Treat it like a full-time degree.
  • Adopt a fighter’s mindset: The program is tough, but that’s what makes it valuable.
  • Apply what you learn: Projects and real-world problem solving will make your knowledge stick.

Looking Ahead

My ultimate goal is to work in the field of Artificial Intelligence. This program is preparing me for that by not only teaching concepts but also testing me at an industry level. It’s more than just a degree — it’s training for the real world.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, I’m proud of my decision to join the IIT Madras BS in Data Science. Yes, it’s demanding. Yes, it requires sacrifices. But it has also transformed me — both as a student and as a person.

If you’re thinking about this program, remember: it’s not an ordinary course. It will push you out of your comfort zone, but in return, it will shape you into someone stronger, smarter, and ready for the future.
